UP IN ARMS, ONAQUI WILD HORSE - apr 19 21-594 Onaqui Wild Horse Herd on the historic Pony Express Trail (Simpson Springs Rd) in Rush Valley, Utah.
I am FURIOUS!!!
Sadly, since I took these images in March of 2021, approx 400 of the 450 herd that was on the WHMA (wild horse management area) of Utah has been captured in the July 2021 helicopter round-ups and sent to penned area. If they are lucky, they will be sent to adoption in October, and a few may find caring owners, but they won’t be free, or wild anymore. Likely kept in small enclosures separated from their bands (family). If they are unlucky they will be adopted through a government program that gives adopters $1000 to keep them for at least a year, then they can sell them to slaughter without any oversight even though they have protected status because no one keeps up with their conditions after the year. These horses are supposed to be protected under a 1971 law, but BLM (Bureau of Land Management) ignores the laws that protects these wild mustangs, and does whatever the hell they want to without any oversight. This was done so that welfare ranchers can access cheaper land for their cattle and sheep to graze on at $1.35 a head as opposed to $20 a head they pay in places like Texas for grazing rights. These iconic horses are pawns by the meat industry! This all takes place on public land, and paid for by taxpayers dollars.

I am FURIOUS!!! As a taxpayer, as a citizen, and even more so as a compassionate human being. This is a TRAVESTY!!!!! Sadly, since I took these images in March of 2021, approx 434 of the 475 herd that was on the WHMA (wild horse management area) of Utah has been captured in the July 2021 helicopter round-ups and sent to penned area. One death of a mare was reported so far. But the herds have been decimated/eradicated from their natural range! If they are lucky, they will be sent to adoption in October, and a few may find caring owners, but they won’t be free, or wild anymore. They will be caged animals. Likely kept in small enclosures and separated from their bands (family). If they are unlucky they will be adopted through a government program that gives adopters $1000 to keep them for at least a year, then they can sell them to slaughter without any oversight even though they have protected status because no one keeps up with their conditions after the year. These horses are supposed to be protected under a 1971 law, but BLM (Bureau of Land Management) ignores the laws that protects these wild mustangs, and does whatever the hell they want to without any oversight in favor of cattle men, who also were in charge of the roundup.
