Description
feb 25 19-1428 As I made my way in darkness hoping to reach a secluded area of beach at dawn, an uneasy feeling came over me. I felt on guard carrying my expensive gear alone, and I was paying extra attention to all the early morning joggers and walkers. During our recent travels, this was the first county we had incidents in (attempted robberies). The previous town left a bad impression on me. So when I came across this dog, guarding his master’s tent (home), he immediately took to me at started walking along towards my destination, a river entering the ocean on La Serena beach, Chile. As I clutched my gear to my chest, he was focused on a walker coming towards us, and when the person saw the dog barking and staring him down, the man turned back and went the other direction. The dog lingered with me, laying quietly and scouting the area as I took photos of seagulls, oystercatchers, stilts, hawks… a very popular spot for birds. And when it was time to head out, he followed me all the way back to where I started, past his tent. And as quickly as he joined me, he left me and joined the growing crowds of people, and stray dogs. He may not have released the impact he had on me, he helped ease my fears and uneasiness and gave me a feeling of safety in a poor and troubled country. I was determined to not let prior circumstances stop me from seeking out my goal, a freshwater oasis in a land arid dessert. He kept quite a few strangers away, and I was grateful for his short lived friendship. I later went back and brought a can of tuna, but I think I accidently gave it to a look alike dog, possibly his relative. This dog acted different, but looked the same. After he ate, I saw my friend down the beach. Not aware of the reward a look alike just ate.
