oct 29 15- 146 A 12 point bull Elk grazes in the pasture at the Mountain Farm Museum in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, Cherokee NC. Manitoban Elk (Cervus elaphus manitobensis) family Cervidae, also known as Wapiti by the Indians, were reintroduced in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park in Cherokee, NC. The original elk that roamed this land, the larger Eastern Elk (Cervus elaphus canadasis) were wiped out to hunters and became extinct in the early 1700’s. In the Great Smokey Mountain National Park at the Mountain Farm Museum, they are protected.
